Newsela
This year, we are using newsela.com as one way to read and analyze nonfiction articles. Newsela is a site that modifies nonfiction articles to be accessible at multiple reading levels so that students are reading at their independent abilities. Periodically, nonfiction articles will be assigned on newsela in various content areas: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. To complete these assignments, students read and annotate the articles, and then complete a short multiple choice quiz. Annotating helps students keep track of their thinking and important details as they read through the text, as well as aids in comprehending each section. The quizzes are aligned to various common core standards to help students apply important close reading skills to many different texts and topics.
