Wonder takes place in the city at a private middle school called Beecher Prep. The protagonist is Auggie Pullman, a 5th grade boy with a severe facial deformity. After being homeschooled most of his life, Auggie decides to attend middle school at Beecher Prep for the first time. However, what begins as an attempt to fit in turns into a series of ongoing challenges for Auggie. The antagonist, Julian Albans, torments Auggie relentlessly, pitting other students against him. In addition, Auggie endures many changes in his personal life that seem only to add to his hardships. R.J. Palacio does an excellent job of portraying these conflicts, challenging readers to think about their own lives and how they have treated others. The characters are also easy to relate to, which makes for an enjoyable read. Those looking for a story of inspiration and hope won't be disappointed. Spoiler alert: this book is a tear jerker!
